Eyewitness NewsNEW YORK (WABC) -- New York City taxi drivers could soon be paying more for refusing to take passengers where they want to go. The City Council voted Wednesday on legislation to raise fines on drivers who refuse to take people to their destination or overcharge them.
Complaints rose 38 percent from 2009 to 2010.
Maximum fines for first offenses would increase from $350 to $500. Maximum fines for second offenses within a twenty four month period would increase from $500 to $1,000. Third and future offenses within a thirty six month period would continue to lead to license revocation, but would also include a maximum $1,000 fine for each offense.The bill still needs Mayor Michael Bloomberg's signature.
