Boxing tycoon Barry Hughes and wife in court over mortgage fraud | Glasgow and West | STV News
Boxing tycoon Barry Hughes and his wife have appeared in court together in public for the first time as they face charges of mortgage fraud.
Hughes, 32, and his wife Jacqueline, 35, are alleged to have lied about income on mortgage applications totalling almost £1.5m.
They also face several charges under the Proceeds of Crime Act for profiting from the sale of the properties that they bought. Mr Hughes is also accused of buying a car worth over £80,000 and a £30,000 watch with some of the profits.
The pair, of Kilmacolm, appeared in the dock together at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Tuesday for a procedural hearing on the case. They both denied the charges. Defence lawyer Iain Fleming, representing Mr Hughes, asked the court to adjourn the case until October this year for further investigations.
Sheriff Linda Ruxton granted the adjournment and the trial was set down for October 3. The couple are alleged to have falsely stated in an application that Mrs Hughes was earning £60,000 a year working for McDonald Interiors in August 2001.
They allegedly did this to get a mortgage of £180,000 to buy a property at 2 Dalruith Park in Brookfield. Then, in January 2004, they allegedly claimed that she was earning £160,000 a year to secure a mortgage of £429,995 for a property at 13 The Grange in Bridge of Weir.
They are also charged with doing the same again in November 2006 by claiming that Mrs Hughes was earning between £160,000 and £224,000 on an application.
This time they allegedly gained a mortgage of £859,999 to buy a property at The Avenue in Kilmacolm. The pair are also accused of profiting from the sale of the properties in Brookfield and Bridge of Weir.
Mrs Hughes has also been charged with gaining £25,000 from renting out the Kilmacolm property. The couple will appear again for trial in October.
