A man in Nyamira County went berserk and slashed two of his friends to death before committing suicide. Ben Omanwa killed Kepha Mogaka, 22, and Erick Nyambati 27, in Nyandoche Ibere village, West Mugirango constituency on Sunday night before he disappeared. His body was discovered several hours later.
Area chief Dancan Moriasi said Omanwa's body was found yesterday morning dangling from an a vocado tree, some 800 metres from his home. Villagers stormed the killer's home and torched three houses. Moriasi said it is not clear why Omanwa opted to kill his friends.
He however said sources indicated that the three disagreed over an issue and Omanwa rushed to his house and fetched a machete and slashed the two death.
The chief said Omanwa might have killed himself after realising that the villagers were baying for his blood," the chief said. His father said he thought his son would use the machete to cut nappier grass for their cattle. He said he was shocked when he learnt that he had used it to kill his friends. The three are said to be close friends and the killing stunned the village.
Omanwa is said to have recently finished a jail term for a criminal case he committed in Nairobi a few years ago. Moriasi urged residents to stop taking the law into their own hands, adding that mob killings and arson is criminal. The bodies were taken to Nyamira District Hospital Mortuary.
