Millionaire Barry Hughes and wife in court on mortgage fraud rap
Jun 8 2011 Victoria Weldon
Millionaire Barry Hughes and his wife appeared in court together for the first time yesterday to face mortgage fraud charges.
The boxing tycoon, 32, and his wife Jacqueline, 35, are alleged to have lied about income on mortgage applications totalling almost £1.5 million.
They also face several charges under the Proceeds of Crime Act for profiting from the sale of the properties.
Barry is also accused of buying a car worth more than £80,000 and a £30,000 watch with some of the profits.
The pair, of Kilmacolm, Renfrewshire, appeared in the dock together at Glasgow Sheriff Court for a procedural hearing on the case. They both denied the charges.
Sheriff Linda Ruxton granted an adjournment for further investigations and trial was set for October 3.
The couple are alleged to have falsely stated in an application that Jacqueline was earning £60,000 a year in August 2001.
They allegedly did this to get a mortgage of £180,000 to buy a property in Brookfield, Renfrewshire.
Then, in January 2004, they allegedly claimed she was earning £160,000 a year to get a mortgage of £429,995 for a property in Bridge of Weir.
They are also charged with doing the same again in November 2006 by claiming Jacqueline earned £224,000. This time, they allegedly got £859,999 to buy a property in Kilmacolm.
The pair are also accused of profiting from the sale of two of the properties.
