BRADLEY COUNTY, TN. (WRCB)-- A woman is dead after crashing a stolen deputy's patrol car into a tree off Interstate 75 Saturday afternoon.

Bradley County Sheriff's spokesperson Bob Gault says a concerned driver called 911 around 1:20 pm to report a woman walking north on I-75 with two small children.

Deputy Dustin Patrick located the unidentified woman about 20 minutes later around mile marker 22. As he began talking to her, she pulled a knife, and cut him on his right hand.

The deputy fired his gun at the woman as she made her way toward his car and eventually sped away, leaving the two children behind.

While traveling north, she ran through a fence and crashed into a large tree located across 3rd Street.

She was taken to Erlanger where she later died.

A witness on the scene says the woman, who appeared to be in her mid-30s, was breathing shallowly while paramedics administered CPR in the back of the ambulance.

He also says he saw four or five bullet holes and blood in the car.

Investigators believe she had been traveling in a stolen car found at exit 20.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is heading up the investigation.

Deputy Patrick, who's been with the department since 2005, will be on administrative leave with pay pending completion of the TBI investigation. That's common practice anytime there is police involved shooting.
